When did you get started with fitness?
I was an overweight and frustrated ballet dancer and I just had enough of yo-yo dieting without seeing any results. I think that a place of utter desperation struck and the fitness bug bit at the right time. I started meditating on the positive points of my physique and doing training that was aimed at changing my lifestyle. My own fitness classes really pushed me to train even on my “off” days (my clients really motivate me) and I have just never stopped since. This industry keeps me focused and excited for the next stage appearance. Since reaching Pro status, I have never looked back. Just keep keeping on! It’s a lifestyle!
What drives you to be so fit?
I think the feeling of freedom that I feel through living a healthy lifestyle is addictive and just inspires me to keep working as hard as I can. Life happens but as long as you keep going and doing what you are supposed to do and not necessarily what you want to do, you will finally become your own motivation and drive. Every time I see how I transform my body from my normal off season look into competition shape, I become my own success story and inspiration. These moments drive me.
What has been the hardest obstacle for you to overcome?
In my daily professional job, as the owner of my own legal practice, it is cardinal for me to stay focused on living the life I want to live in terms of keeping my body healthy. It has proven to be a great challenge in combining these two professions. I would not say that it is an obstacle; I believe I have been so blessed to have been able to choose which profession I would like to pursue and having two such complete opposite fields of specialization keeps me intrigued, excited and ready for the next great challenge.
When doing a high pressured job like I do, it becomes a challenge to stay focused, but when I get my opposing legal party asking me questions on health and wellness, it is just priceless. Knowing I can do fitness and have a professional career is just an empowering feeling.
What is your favorite body part to train?
Full body!! I mix up my training so often and I think this prevents me from favoring one body part over the other. I believe that this has contributed to my symmetry and muscle density in my physique. If I simply had to pick a body part I would say the “tushy” is a favorite to train. Keeping the bum tight and tiny is an absolute must!
Do you incorporate much cardio into your training?
I am such a cardio believer! I see tremendous results when incorporating a lot of cardio into my workouts. Not a day goes by that I do not do some form of cardiovascular exercise. I have such a high muscle tone and the combination of weight training and a cardio mix keeps me looking feminine but still firm.
Could you tell us about your current training program?
Fast & Furious!!! My aerobics method of training is something I completely believe in. With a blessed high muscle tone my body reacts extremely well by mixing cardio with light weight training. This prevents an overkill of muscle building and the aim of a lean physique is achieved. I have found that this fit, fab and fabulous way of training sculpt great results for the ladies that I train as well. A workout should start with you looking like a true fitness model and it should end with you drenched in sweat! Train hard or go home!
Day 1:Bi’s, Tri’s and Delts mixed with cardio together;
Day 2:Full leg workout with cardio and strength training;
Day 3:Abs mixed with cardio;
Day 4:Full cardio hour, sprints and power plyometrics.
And then I repeat it all again!
People often cannot grasp my light weights training sessions as my muscle tone is so dense, but when you understand the mind-muscle connection and aim at pushing the muscle instead of the weights, the muscle will submit to evolving into the perfect feminine form. This prevents me in becoming too big and muscular.
What does your diet look like?
I really stick to a mind, body and soul method.
My daily regimen consist of a high, lean protein intake for instance chicken, complex carbs which are high in fibre like a green apple, good fats like raw almond nuts and bottles and bottles of water.
If you work with calories, you can really explore all avenues of different food choices available to you. This is the art JAVL (myself and my hubby) has mastered. Competitors worldwide admire our nutrition plans seeing as it certainly does not consist of only broccoli and fish! International athletes have requested our advice seeing as most “diets” are very bland and without variation especially at this level of competition. My eating plans and supplementation schedules are set on LIFESTYLE achievements and I believe in a variety of foods. You are what you eat!
Do you Take Any Supplements?
I run a wellness and lifestyle fitness franchise with my husband, Jacques Van Der Linde, called the JVL Wellness & Lifestyle Centers. We specialize in bringing our clients the latest in all things related to supplementation, nutrition, training, fitness clothing etc. Our clients know that we give them advice on a professional level and their loyalty is just priceless.
So yes, I am very prone supplementation. This is so important in your normal everyday life and it becomes of cardinal importance the closer Jacques and I get to competing.
I love to indulge in my husband’s homemade Nitro-pure pancakes by Myogenic. This Protein casseinate based meal assists me in building lean muscle without retaining water. The Superpump Max and the Vasotropin from Gaspari, is a must before my workouts. These products help with my circulation and energy levels. The building blocks of my physique are of course all of the crucial vitamins I consume on a daily basis. I alternate my fat burners constantly to avoid my body becoming accustomed to the product. At the moment I am on Methyl Burn which is a product aimed at high performance training and this gets me through every workout. I have my detox tablets from TNT/ Solgar as part of my monthly ritual to cleanse my body and keep it feeling like a well oiled machine.
If you could start back from the first day you started training would you do anything different?
There are not regrets in life, only lessons. Whenever I did something and it did not turn out the way I had planned, I leant the lesson and moved on a quick as possible. I will not change a thing. I have come such a long way from my before photos and every step I took was the step in the right direction and closer to my dream life.
What is your biggest “Fitness” accomplishment?
Every medal, magazine cover, successful goal reached by a client and the daily choice of healthy living I make would have to be combined in one to summarize my greatest accomplishments. Growing our JVL brand is a constant and on-going testimony of hard work and this in itself is a great victory for Jacques and me.
Is there anyone in the fitness industry that you look up to?
I believe to surround myself with people greater than myself as this allows me to dream big! One of those people is without a doubt my husband. Marrying my best friend remains my greatest achievement and his work ethic, discipline and consistent support are all attributes I strive to in perfecting.
I have had the honor of meeting some of the fitness “greats”, Mrs. Jennifer Nicole Lee, Jamie Eason, the formidable Cathy Savage, Paul Dillet, Monica Brand, Rich Gaspari and I believe that interacting with each of these individuals has taught me a tremendous amount about myself and their advice, guidance and motivation has changed and formed me into the fitness individual which I am today.
